Chaperone Information for Patients

At Berinsfield Health Centre, we want every patient to feel safe, comfortable and supported during their appointment. You are always welcome to have a chaperone present for any examination, procedure or consultation if you would like one.

What is a Chaperone?

A chaperone is a trained member of our team who is present during an examination to:

  • Support you and help you feel at ease
  • Protect your privacy and dignity
  • Act as an impartial observer

A family member or friend may accompany you, but they cannot act as a formal chaperone.

When Can I Have a Chaperone?

You can request a chaperone at any time, especially if:

  • The examination involves intimate areas (breasts, genital or rectal areas)
  • You feel unsure, uncomfortable or anxious
  • You simply prefer to have one present

Your clinician may also request a chaperone if they feel it is appropriate.

If a Chaperone Isn’t Available

If a trained chaperone is not immediately available, we can:

  • Rearrange your appointment, or
  • Discuss with you whether the examination needs to continue sooner

We will always ensure you feel comfortable and supported before proceeding.

Children and Young People

Children and young people can also have a chaperone. Parents or carers are usually involved, and we make sure the young person’s wishes are respected.

Your Privacy and Dignity

Before any examination, your clinician will:

  • Explain what will happen and why
  • Ask for your permission (consent)
  • Provide privacy to undress or prepare

Your chaperone will stay for the whole examination and remain discreet.

Cultural, Personal or Communication Needs

Please tell us if you:

  • Prefer a clinician of a particular gender
  • Need an interpreter or communication support
  • Have cultural or religious preferences

We will do our best to meet your needs.

Have Questions?

If you would like a chaperone, or have any questions about this policy, please speak to your clinician or a member of our team. We are here to help you feel comfortable and supported throughout your care.
