Important Update: Weight loss injections including Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) not routinely available on the NHS

Following recent media coverage and public interest, we would like to clarify the current NHS position regarding the availability of weight loss injections, including Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for weight management.

Mounjaro has been approved by NICE for use in weight management, but it is not available for routine prescribing by GPs. Instead, it is being introduced through a strictly controlled rollout, targeting individuals with the highest clinical need.

Who Is Eligible?

To be considered for NHS treatment with Mounjaro, patients must meet nationally-set criteria, including:

  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher (adjusted for ethnicity).
  • A diagnosis of at least four of the following conditions:
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • Hypertension
    • Dyslipidaemia (abnormal blood fats)
    • Obstructive sleep apnoea
    • Cardiovascular disease

What This Means for Patients

  • If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will be contacted directly by the practice in the coming weeks.
  • Please do not book appointments to discuss weight loss injections, as this may delay care for others and GPs are not able to prescribe it outside the approved pathway

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as the NHS works to ensure this new treatment is delivered safely and equitably.
